We’re getting ready to have another good time at The Woodbine Opry this Saturday night. Our guests will be Joe Muench, T.K. Hilton, and Debbie Spivey.  We always have a good time when these folks visit with us.

This week’s trivia question:  We’ve all heard of Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys.  Tommy Duncan, the “hillbilly Bing Crosby” sang on all of their hit songs except one.  Tommy was fired because of his complaining of Bob Wills’ drinking and missing shows.  What song did he not sing, and who sang it?

Saturday Night, 2-18-12

We had a fine program and a fun evening tonight at The Woodbine Opry, right here in beautiful downtown Woodbine, Georgia.  The house was full again and I hope everyone enjoyed the music, visiting, and dancing.  Our first-time visitors were from McIntosh County, Blackshear, Carrollton, and Burke County, Georgia, Macclenny, Fl., Weir, WV, Durant, Ok., Cleveland, Oh., Ontario, Canada, Upstate, NY, and Rochester, NY.  We also had a busload of visitors from Pine Ridge Baptist Church out of Brunswick.   It’s always good seeing new faces at the Opry and I hope that you had a good time with us.

Thanks to all who donated to the cake table.  The half-n-half was $242.00.

Those who provided tonight’s entertainment were J.C. Hunnicutt, Aubrey Jones, Hershel Hickox, Brian Rowland, Carroll Hayes, Thumper Bennett, Robert McCullers, Nelly Aba, and yours truly.  I so appreciate all of the folks for donating their time and talent and providing another evening at The Woodbine Opry.

Mid-Week Tid Bits, 2-16-12

Another Thursday is upon us and we are rapidly approaching another evening at The Woodbine Opry.  I hope that you all are having a good week.

All of the fellas in the band are looking forward to another fun-filled Saturday night here at the Opry.  J.C. and Brian will be back with Robert, Hershel, Aubrey, Thumper, and myself this week, and we’re going to have a good time.

This week’s trivia question:  (Perhaps a little more difficult for you this week.)  This country music artist and cowboy poet was riding bulls in rodeos as a teenager, but was stricken with polio at the age of 15 and took up guitar for therapy.  He is a graduate of West Texas State University with a degree in animal science and agronomy.  He spent four years hosting the National Finals Rodeo.  He also produced the movie, “Big Bad John”, and made appearances in two movies.  He is a published author of cowboy poetry and was named “2006 Poet Laureate of the State Of Texas”.  Several of his songs have made it to the top 40 in the country charts.  Who is he?

Saturday Night, 2-11-12

Regardless of the fact that it was a cool, breezy evening in southeast Georgia, it was a hot time tonight at The Woodbine Opry.  Another full house crowd was on hand for some good ole’ country music here in Woodbine, Georgia.  Our first-time visitors were from St. Simons Island, Waycross, and Vidalia, Georgia, Yulee, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Key West, Fl., and Ontario, Canada.  I certainly hope that each of you enjoyed your evening here with us and that you can come back again.

Thanks to all who donated to the cake table, we again had a nice variety of goodies to give away.  Our half-n-half was $229.00, of which the nice lady from Upstate New York donated $100.00 to the band.  Thank you very much for this gesture of appreciation for those who bring The Woodbine Opry to you every Saturday night, free gratis. 

Those providing tonight’s entertainment were Robert McCullers, Aubrey Jones, Thumper Bennett, Hershel Hickox, Phil Tipton, Lonnie Portwood, Stevette Rehberg, Debbie Spivey, John LeMaster, and yours truly.  I really cannot thank these folks enough for the outstanding program  they put on tonight.

Mid-Week Tid Bits, 2-9-12

A good Thursday morning to all of you, the week is sliding right on by.  I hope that everyone has had a good week thus far.

We have another good program lined up for this Saturday night.  Thumper will be back with us on drums, Stevette Rehberg will also be visiting with us, as well as John LeMaster. 

This week’s trivia question:   At the age of 13 this female country recording artist was touring with Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and George Jones as a pedal steel guitar player. She had numerous hits during the 1970’s and 80’s and received the Country Music Association’s “Entertainer of the Year” award in 1980 and 1981. Who is she?

Saturday Night, 2-4-12

Another full-house crowd was present tonight at The Woodbine Opry.  The dance floor stayed very active and everyone seemed to have a good time.  Our first-time visitors came from St. Marys, Browntown, Folkston, and Ashburn, Ga., Jacksonville, Fl., Wilmington, De., Philadelphia, Pa., El Paso and Dripping Springs, Tx.,  Corning, N.Y.,   Grantsville, Md., and Russellville,  Ar.  I certainly hope that all of you enjoyed your visit with us here at The Opry, and that you will have the opportunity to again visit with us.  Thanks to all who donated to the cake table as we again had a full table with a good variety to give out.  Our half-n-half was $241.00.

Those musicians providing tonight’s entertainment were Robert McCullers, Brian Rowland, Aubrey Jones, J.C. Hunnicutt,  Hershel Hickox,  T.K. Hilton, Joe Muench, Thumper Bennett, Debbie Spivey, and yours truly.  Without the willlingness of these folks there would be no Woodbine Opry, so I cannot thank them enough, and I know that you also appreciate their dedication in bringing this music program every Saturday night.

Mid-Week Tid Bits, 2-2-12

Now that we are starting a new month, it makes me wonder what happened to January.  It seemed to go by rather quickly and we didn’t get much winter weather out of it.  Oh well, we get what we get when it comes to the weather.

This Saturday night we are going to have another fine program here at The Woodbine Opry.  Our guests this week will be Joe Muench and T.K. Hilton, two very popular musicians both with the audience and with the guys in the band.  It is always a pleasure having Joe and T.K. with us.

This week’s trivia queston:  This country music artist began playing piano for the Louisiana Hayride before moving to Nashville.  He was a much sought after musician for recording sessions, playing for Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison and others.  Elvis’ first national hit, Heartbreak Hotel, featured his playing.  He popularized  the  slip note piano style of playing country music.  He became well known to listeners with his own release of a record in 1960.  Who is he and what record made his name known to all?

Saturday Night, 1-28-12

Another fun-filled night was had at The Woodbine Opry tonight.  A nearly full-house crowd was on hand and we stayed out late.  Those band members tonight were Robert McCullers, J.C. Hunnicutt, Aubrey Jones, Hershel Hickox, Brian Rowland, Thumper Bennett, and yours truly.  Our guests tonight were Phil Tipton, Nelly Aba, Debbie Spivey, and Kevin Walker.  It was good to see Kevin again as it has been a couple of years since he has been with us.

Thanks to all who donated to the cake table as we again had a bunch to give away.  The half-n-half was $203.00.  Our first-time visitors came from Kingsland, Waycross, Alma, and Savannah, Ga., Boston and Plymouth, Ma., Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, Pa., Kingsville, Md., and Minot, N.D.  I hope that you all enjoyed your evening with us and can make it back again.

Mid-Week Tid Bits, 1-26-12

I hope that everyone is having a good week.  With these spring-like days we are experiencing it’s hard not to have a good day.

I expect to have another good crowd on hand this Saturday night for The Woodbine Opry.  All of the band will be there and our guests will be Thumper Bennett, Debbie Spivey, and Phil Tipton. 

This week’s trivia question:  This country artist established himself as one of the most respected and versatile performers in country music.  In 1939, he became the first country artist to host a national radio program, NBC’s Avalon Time, co-hosted by Red Skelton.  In 1945, he became the first country artist to record in Nashville.  His critics dubbed him “the barnyard Bing Crosby”.  Who is he?

Saturday Night, 1-21-12

We had a great time tonight at The Woodbine Opry.  The house was packed and so many were dancing and everyone was having a good time.  Folks, that’s what The Woodbine Opry is all about; having fun and old music. 

Our first-time visitors were from Waycross, Ga., Yulee, Fl., Indiana, Minneapolis, and Stillwater, Mn.  I hope you all enjoyed the evening with us and felt at home. 

Again, thanks to all who donated to the cake table tonight.  There was a glitch in the book as to who brought the items, and for this I apologize as I firmly believe those folks deserve to be recognized.  At any rate, thanks so much; we had a good bit to give away, and a lot of folks to give to.  Our half-n-half was $260.00.

The band members tonight were Robert McCullers, Aubrey Jones, J.C. Hunnicutt, Hershel Hickox, Brian Rowland, and yours truly.  Our guests were Joe Muench, T.K. Hilton, and Phil Tipton.  Tim Murray got us checked out on the sound booth and Charlie Bruce kept us straight the rest of the evening.  Thanks to all of these folks for presenting another great evening of old country music here at The Woodbine Opry.
