Now that we are starting a new month, it makes me wonder what happened to January. It seemed to go by rather quickly and we didn’t get much winter weather out of it. Oh well, we get what we get when it comes to the weather.

This Saturday night we are going to have another fine program here at The Woodbine Opry. Our guests this week will be Joe Muench and T.K. Hilton, two very popular musicians both with the audience and with the guys in the band. It is always a pleasure having Joe and T.K. with us.

This week’s trivia queston: This country music artist began playing piano for the Louisiana Hayride before moving to Nashville. He was a much sought after musician for recording sessions, playing for Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison and others. Elvis’ first national hit, Heartbreak Hotel, featured his playing. He popularized the slip note piano style of playing country music. He became well known to listeners with his own release of a record in 1960. Who is he and what record made his name known to all?

Saturday Night, 1-28-12

Another fun-filled night was had at The Woodbine Opry tonight. A nearly full-house crowd was on hand and we stayed out late. Those band members tonight were Robert McCullers, J.C. Hunnicutt, Aubrey Jones, Hershel Hickox, Brian Rowland, Thumper Bennett, and yours truly. Our guests tonight were Phil Tipton, Nelly Aba, Debbie Spivey, and Kevin Walker. It was good to see Kevin again as it has been a couple of years since he has been with us.

Thanks to all who donated to the cake table as we again had a bunch to give away. The half-n-half was $203.00. Our first-time visitors came from Kingsland, Waycross, Alma, and Savannah, Ga., Boston and Plymouth, Ma., Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, Pa., Kingsville, Md., and Minot, N.D. I hope that you all enjoyed your evening with us and can make it back again.

I hope that everyone is having a good week. With these spring-like days we are experiencing it’s hard not to have a good day.

I expect to have another good crowd on hand this Saturday night for The Woodbine Opry. All of the band will be there and our guests will be Thumper Bennett, Debbie Spivey, and Phil Tipton.

This week’s trivia question: This country artist established himself as one of the most respected and versatile performers in country music. In 1939, he became the first country artist to host a national radio program, NBC’s Avalon Time, co-hosted by Red Skelton. In 1945, he became the first country artist to record in Nashville. Saturday Night, 1-21-12

We had a great time tonight at The Woodbine Opry. The house was packed and so many were dancing and everyone was having a good time. Folks, that’s what The Woodbine Opry is all about; having fun and old music.

Our first-time visitors were from Waycross, Ga., Yulee, Fl., Indiana, Minneapolis, and Stillwater, Mn. I hope you all enjoyed the evening with us and felt at home.

Again, thanks to all who donated to the cake table tonight. There was a glitch in the book as to who brought the items, and for this I apologize as I firmly believe those folks deserve to be recognized. At any rate, thanks so much; we had a good bit to give away, and a lot of folks to give to. Our half-n-half was $260.00.

The band members tonight were Robert McCullers, Aubrey Jones, J.C. Hunnicutt, Hershel Hickox, Brian Rowland, and yours truly. Our guests were Joe Muench, T.K. Hilton, and Phil Tipton. Tim Murray got us checked out on the sound booth and Charlie Bruce kept us straight the rest of the evening. Thanks to all of these folks for presenting another great evening of old country music here at The Woodbine Opry.

We are all getting ready for another fun evening at The Woodbine Opry this Saturday night. Besides the guys in the band, Aubry Jones, Robert McCullers, Hershel Hickox, J.C. Hunnicutt, and Brian Rowland, our guests will be Joe Muench and T.K. Hilton to provide another evening of entertainment. We’re going to have a good time, so I hope that you make plans to be there with us.

We’ve started off this year having a continuation of good crowds. I’m sure that I speak for all of the fellas in the band when I say that we get a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction out of our program here in Woodbine on Saturday nights. We look out at everyone dancing and having a good time, and that makes us feel good about what we are doing.

This week’s trivia question: This country music performer won two National Banjo Championships and then pursued a boxing career. At the age of 17 he had won 15 fights in a row before deciding that he would rather pursue a musicial career. In his early years he was the leader in Wanda Jackson’s band. He later co-hosted a national televison show for over 20 years. Who is he?

Welcome again to The Woodbine Opry/Saturday Night blog! We had another fun evening tonight; you could almost say that it was girl’s night out. Our guest performers were Stevette Rehberg, Nelly Aba, and Debbie Spivey. The Opry band members tonight were Brian Rowland, Hershel Hickox, Robert McCullers, Thumper Bennett, Aubrey Jones, and yours truly. Tim Murray operated the sound board and got us squared away.

We had a full table of goodies to give away and I thank all of you who donated to this cause. Our half-n-half was $197.00, which again was a pretty good haul. Our first-time visitors came from Jacksonville, Fl.

Mid-Week Tid Bits, 1-12-12

I hope that everyone is having a good week and that you’re getting ready for another evening at The Woodbine Opry. I know that all of us who perform are, and we have a good time doing it every Saturday night.

I’m not sure what the television program “Love Town” is all about as I don’t watch much TV and I don’t keep up with much concerning it, however, I know that this production is eyeing Kingsland as the next location. An advanced camera crew may be with us one of these Saturday nights to just see how The Woodbine Opry can fit into this program. I can’t say with any certainty when they might show up, so if you want the chance to see yourself on TV, you’d better be there.

This week’s trivia question: This former Marine has had 14 number one songs and over 150 recordings. Born in Saratoga, Texas in 1931, this country music legend still performs nearly 100 concerts a year. Who is he?

What a great program we had for the start of a new year! A nearly full house crowd was on hand for what I believe to be a very, very good night of entertainment. Where else can you hear the old country songs but right here at The Woodbine Opry. I know that many enjoy our program and what we are doing, and we have a good time of doing what we do.

Thanks to all who donated to the cake table as we again had a nice variety of goodies to give away. Our half-n-half was $267.00; a great start to the new year. Thanks to Dick for his donation back to the band from his winnings. Also, thanks to those of you who tipped the band, it certainly helps with at least making a little gas money. Our first-time visitors were from Opaloosa County, Fl., and Maine.

The performers tonight were Robert McCullers, J.C. Hunnicutt, Brian Rowland, Joe Muench, T.K. Hilton, Aubrey Jones, Hershel Hickox, Debbie Spivey, John LeMaster, and yours truly. I cannot express my thanks enough for all of these folks who donate their time and talents in providing another evening’s entertainment here at The Woodbine Opry.

Here we are starting a new year at The Woodbine Opry. We have a good program scheduled for Saturday night as we have Joe Muench and T.K.Hilton joining us. It is always a pleasure having these two men with us here at Woodbine.

We had a good year here at The Woodbine Opry. For the most part, the crowds have been full-house or nearly full-house every Saturday night. Although the economy is suffering, we broke our record of giving away money on the 1/2 and 1/2 as we handed out $11,135.00. Appearing on stage this past year were 32 performers, some were first-time guests but many were familiar faces to the Opry. I am looking forward to another great year performing with the band and meeting new friends and greeting old ones.

This week’s trivia question: This radio announcer beamed his Road Show to truckers all across America from the studios of WWL in New Orleans. He passed away on November 24, 2011, Who was he?

Everyone was in a festive mood as The Woodbine Opry closed out another year. Our first-time visitors came from Hortense, Ga., Elkin, NC, and Spartanburg, SC. The half and half was $187.00. Thanks to all who donated to the cake table and to all of you who bought tickets.

Those performing this evening were J.C. Hunnicutt, Robert McCullers, Aubrey Jones, Thumper Bennett, and Brian Rowland. Thanks to Vern Parker for filling in on bass guitar tonight, it was Vern’s first visit to The Opry. Thanks also to Debbie Spivey and Nelly Aba for singing for us tonight. A great big thanks to Brian Rowland for taking charge of tonight’s Opry.
